Deep Democracy

Our work is grounded in Deep Democracy. Originally developed in post-apartheid South Africa to bring divided communities into real dialogue, Deep Democracy is now used around the world to improve how teams communicate, make decisions, and work through tension. It’s built on a simple but powerful idea: the unspoken things in a team—disagreements, frustrations, doubts—don’t go away just because no one talks about them. They linger, grow, and eventually block progress.

Co Founder

Mirjam Heldmann

Mirjam is a high-energy facilitator, trail ultramarathon runner, and co-owner of Vox Agora, where she helps groups have the conversations that truly matter. She designs and leads powerful processes—rooted in Deep Democracy, DEI, and co-created trainings—that spark real connection and movement.

With a deep belief in the potential of people, Mirjam inspires and enables others to be bold, courageous, and honest—even when it’s uncomfortable. Her mindset, shaped by running seemingly impossible ultramarathons, shows up in how she holds space: with clarity, strength, and care. Whether guiding a team through tension or helping a community find its voice, she creates the conditions for people to step up, speak out, and take action.

Co Founder

Theo Bouma

Theo brings a wealth of experience to his facilitation practice, combining over thirty years of leadership and governance expertise with a deep commitment to inclusive dialogue. As co-owner of Vox Agora, he helps groups navigate challenging conversations with skill and empathy, drawing on the principles of Deep Democracy to foster understanding and connection.

Guided by the conviction that it is not that interesting who you are but, rather, who you can become, he has a keen eye for people and organizations’ potential—used to operating in diverse contexts, nationally and internationally, in dialogue and negotiations with government representatives, funding organizations and civil society organizations and movements.
